At midnight, July 20, The Dark Knight Rises opened. With the anticipation and publicity surrounding Christopher Nolan's conclusion to the trilogy, many theaters had midnight screenings of the film, one such in Aurora, Colorado; an eastern suburb of Denver.
This night at the movies ended in senseless tragedy, as James Holmes, entered the movie theater, dressed similarly to the villain Bane, tear gassed the movie theater and then when those in the theater were at their weakest and most unprotected moment, began shooting these innocent people. As of 12:40 EDT, 13 were killed and 50 injured. "The 'Right' Solutions" prays for those who were senselessly murdered, as well as their families who must endure their loss.
What makes me just as angry as the loss of life here is that there are some out there who make political hay over a random act of violence, especially in an election year. We know these opportunistic jerks have done this in the past and are already starting, from Piers Morgan needing to find a way to get higher ratings, to Michael Bloomberg, to blame the TEA Party, Sarah Palin, Conservatives and Rush Limbaugh. (Who is already facing their ire for calling out the left in their Bain/Bane comparison) Obama hasn't gotten partisan about this yet, but just wait...it's coming; just like he did after Gabby Giffords was shot. Politicians who try to take political advantage are being unfair to those killed, as well as their families, and should severely punished in public opinion polls and actual polls for their unscrupulous acts. The American people are the only ones who can hold them to account and must not overlook that responsibility.
Americans need to know that James Holmes did this, nobody else, and I will take solace that he will never see the light of day, as well as the fact that his last moment in life will likely be strapped to a gurney at prison in Colorado, just before he receives his lethal injection...well, that's unless nobody in prison kills him first.
